Granite Platform Applications: Inspection, Custom Components and Structural Parts

author:hxrtools Time:2026-11-03 19:58:24 Click:87

In precision metrology, the granite platform is not a cheaper alternative to metal — it is a different engineering answer. Granite does not rust, does not burr when a part is dropped on it, is non-magnetic, and holds a lapped flatness that a scraped iron plate cannot match. That combination is why calibration rooms, CMM stations and gauge labs specify stone, and why custom marble structural parts are increasingly used as machine bases where thermal stability matters more than clamping.

Core Properties That Drive the Specification

PropertyWhy It Matters
No rust, no corrosionZero oiling maintenance; stable in humid or coastal plants
No burr on impactA dropped component chips locally instead of raising a false high spot
Non-magnetic, non-conductiveSafe around electronic gauges and magnetic fixtures
High hardness, low wearLong calibration intervals under normal inspection loads
Thermal stabilityLow expansion compared with steel; less drift across shifts
Lapped flatness to grade 000 / 00Suitable for the tightest calibration work

Product Forms and Where Each Is Used

  • Granite surface plate / marble platform: the reference plane for height gauges, dial indicators and layout inspection. Available in grades 000, 00, 0 and 1.

  • Granite round platform: rotary inspection and runout checks where a circular reference suits the part geometry.

  • Granite V-block: supports round workpieces for concentricity and runout measurement.

  • Squares, straightedges and parallels: angle and straightness references that never rust.

  • Marble structural parts: custom bases, gantry supports and machine frames where dimensional stability under temperature change is critical.

  • Granite components with inserts: threaded stainless inserts allow light clamping and fixture mounting.

Choosing an Accuracy Grade

Grade is a statement about total deviation over the working surface, so it must always be read together with plate size. Grade 00 on a small bench plate is economical; grade 00 on a 3 m bed is a significant engineering and cost commitment. Specify the grade your measurement uncertainty actually requires — over-specifying adds cost without improving your process capability.

Installation: The Step That Decides Whether the Grade Survives

  • Support the plate at its designated points (usually three-point or multi-point stands) — never on a random frame.

  • Level carefully with a precision level before use; uneven support is the main cause of apparent flatness failure.

  • Keep the plate away from direct sunlight, heaters, and draughts that create thermal gradients across the surface.

  • Use a cover when the plate is idle; dust and grit are abrasive under measurement loads.

Daily Care

  • Clean with a dedicated stone cleaner or mild detergent — never oil the surface, as oil films attract dust and alter gauge readings.

  • Rotate the working area to distribute wear.

  • Avoid edge impacts; granite chips, and a chipped corner can invalidate the calibrated area.

  • Schedule periodic re-certification and keep the calibration record with the plate.

Custom Granite Components

Beyond flat plates, granite can be machined into custom structural parts — bases, brackets, beams and assembly fixtures — with drilled holes, slots and bonded inserts. Typical drivers are extreme stability requirements in precision equipment, semiconductor and optical assembly, or any application where a metal structure's thermal growth is the limiting factor. Send a drawing and our engineers will assess machinability, insert layout and achievable grade.

FAQ

Q1: Can granite be drilled or threaded?

Yes, via bonded stainless steel inserts. Heavy clamping loads should still go to a T-slotted cast iron platform.

Q2: Is granite suitable for a welding or shop-floor environment?

For inspection, yes. For welding fit-up with heavy clamping and impact, specify cast iron instead.

Q3: What sizes are available?

From small bench plates to large custom inspection beds and structural components, all made to order with matched stands.
