T-slot cast iron platforms: what they do and how to use them right

Walk past any machine shop and you'll probably see a T-slot cast iron platform doing something different in each bay—holding a shaft for drilling, clamping a frame for welding, supporting an assembly for alignment. That flexibility is why these tables have been shop-floor staples for decades. The T-slots change everything about how you approach workholding.

Slot sizes and what they mean

The T-slots machined into the surface are what make the system work. Common widths run 14mm, 18mm, 22mm, and 28mm. Wider slots handle bigger bolts and more clamping force. Narrower slots give you more positioning density on smaller tables. The slot size you need depends on what you're holding and how hard you need to clamp it.

Slot spacing—the distance between parallel slots—is usually standardized between 100mm and 250mm depending on table size. For machining setup—drilling, milling, boring—the table gives you a rigid base that resists cutting forces and vibration. For assembly work, the modular clamping lets you hold components in alignment while joining them.
