Keeping your cast iron welding platform in shape: a maintenance routine

A cast iron welding platform costs enough that you should think about maintenance before you need to. The shops that get decades of accurate service out of their tables are the ones that follow a routine. The shops that don't are the ones replacing tables every few years and wondering why.

Every day

Clean the surface after each use. Debris and grinding dust left on the plate get pressed into the cast iron under workpiece weight, creating tiny pits over time. A brass or nylon brush works—skip the steel brush, it'll scratch the surface.

Oil the surface at the end of the day. Any light rust-preventive oil or WD-40 works. In humid climates, this isn't optional. Untreated cast iron starts showing surface rust within hours of exposure to moisture. It's not dramatic, but it's cumulative.

Deal with weld spatter as it happens. The longer it sits, the harder it bonds. Use a chisel or scraper, but go easy—you're trying to remove the spatter, not gouge the table underneath. Anti-spatter spray helps prevent it in the first place. Most cast iron welding platform factories apply it before shipping, but it wears off and needs reapplication.

Every week

Walk around the table and look for rust spots, deep scratches, or dents. Check the T-slot channels for debris. Verify that leveling hasn't shifted—this takes two minutes with a precision level and catches problems before they affect your work.

Every month

Take everything off the table and clean it thoroughly, including under overhanging edges and inside T-slot channels. Apply a fresh coat of protective oil or wax to all exposed cast iron. Then check the level again. Floor settlement and loosened leveling bolts cause the platform to shift gradually, and gradual shifts mean gradual accuracy loss.

Seasonal and annual

If your climate has humid summers and dry winters, step up the rust-prevention treatments during the humid months. Vapor corrosion inhibitor (VCI) products work well in enclosed storage areas.

Get the platform calibrated annually at minimum. For tables used in precision measurement, twice a year is safer. The calibration report tells you the current flatness condition and flags any areas that have degraded.

Compare each year's calibration results with previous years. If you see a trend, you can predict when resurfacing will be needed and schedule it during a slow period instead of scrambling when it becomes urgent.

Resurfacing options

This is where cast iron earns its keep long-term. When the surface drifts past tolerance, you have two choices:

Regrinding gets you back to Grade 2 or 3 specs. It's relatively fast and affordable. Fine for general fabrication tables where moderate precision is enough.

Rescraping gets you back to Grade 0 or 1. It costs more and takes longer, but the scraped bearing surface holds lubricant better and stays stable longer than a ground surface. For inspection platforms and precision tables, rescraping is worth it.

Storage

If the table isn't in use for a while: clean it, oil it, cover it, and don't stack things on it. Keep the storage area at stable temperature and humidity. It sounds obvious. It doesn't happen as often as it should.
